"AESTHETIC SENSE."

8 HOARDING ADVERTISERS. SITES SUITABLE FOR POSTERS. That both poster hoarding advertisers and contractors display an aesthetic sense in designing their advertising matter was the contention of the Great South Road Beautifying Council at its meeting held last week. The utility of the poster was also recognised by the council, which appreciated the efforts of advertising contractors who supplied decorative designs. At the same time the council believed that much of the value of hoarding advertising would be lost through the choice of a wrong locality for the poster. Considerable displeasure of the travelling public had been directed towards this tactical error. Principles embodying this belief were suggested by the council. The main point was that hoardings should be confined to sites which, either in city or suburban districts, would be classed as shop areas. Hoardings were quite permissible on vacant sections in -hop areas in towns, but should not be allowed if the site already presented a pleasant aspect by reason of trees or other natural beauties. Where they would hide offensive places or ugly sheds it was thought that posters should be allowed; but the council protested against their erection on open roads between towns where they would spoil the countryside.
