SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A highly informed lecture upon peace was delivered by Miss ' Edgar to the League of Penwomen on Friday afternoon. Miss Edgar gripped the attention of her' audience, for over an hour while she detailed the various movements now actively engaged in the effort to obtain peace. The lecturer -was introduced by -the president, Mrs. Mary Stuart-Boyd. -''#. ■ -X- it # A largely attended meeting of the excutive of the Waitemata Women's Progressive League was held at Dr. H. Y. C. Wilkie's residence, Bayswater, on Wednesday afternoon. Arrangements were made for a children's fancy dress ball to be held shortly. A programme of vocal and instrumental items was given by Misses Skinner, Parr and E. Roberts, and Messrs. Hocken/Mcikle and Maria.- The pianists were the Misses Skinner and Bussey, and Mrs..Osborne, who acted as hostess for the evening, was assisted by Misses Parr and Roberts. A successful social, the .first arranged bv the new Baptist Fellowship League which-has been formed at Papatoetoe, was held in the. Renown Hall, Papatoetoe, on Saturday evening. -There-was an.attendance of 90, including a number of friends from the Otahuhu Baptist Church. The' Rev.- T: H. EccerSall, of Otahuhu, presided and .welcomed -those present. He said a programme Qf an educational and entertaining nature had been drawn up in with the Church's- in the Papatoetoe district. During th© evening a pro-, gramme of music, recitations, games : and competitions out under the direction of Mr. M. Eimpton. -Weal solos were contributed by Miss L.. Linton, Miss Bray and Mr. Salter. Mr. A. White gave a, violin solo, Master .Norman Daw a pianoforte solo, and Air. Cyril White elocution -and ™°"\; Novelty competitions were won lay Miss Gosden and Master Norman Daw. Miss E. Long and Miss L. Linton were accompanists. Supper was provided, and tnc evening, concluded with the singing oi j "Auld Lang Syne." : ' *■

A kitchen evening -was given by the Misses Whitehead at their hemic, "Oruaiti," Tc Papapa, on Saturday in /honour of 1 Miss Edna Gillespie, of Westmere, on the occasion of her approaching marriage to Mr. G. Broomfield. Several competitions took place, the winner of the button guessing competition being Miss L.' Stokes.- Miss Gillespie was the recipient of many useful presents. Miss G.. Whitehead wore a frock of flame beaded eatin, and Miss M. Whitehead salmon pink taffeta with diamante. Among the guests present were: Mcsdames Whitehead, Gillespie, Ward, Gribblc, Broaximore, Sim, liinton; Misses E. Gillespie, M. Buckley, G. Buckley, L. Stokes, E. Hamman and E. Fulton. •

At the Parish Hall, Northeote, on Saturday the Northeote Co-opbrativc Social Club held a successful social and dance. Mr. W. Mayall supplied the music. Much appreciated items were given by Mrs. Gunman, Misses P. Johnson, Mar-jorie Stewart, Chippcnfield, Messrs. A. Harding and De Eosc. During the evening a presentation was made to a foundation member of the club, Mrs. J. Warren, who is leaving shortly for the Old Country, which consisted of a travelling case. The presentation was made by Mr. W. Rackett, president, who "made reference to the long and useful service of Mrs. Warren. Among those present were: Mesdames W. Rackett, De Kose, J. Davidson, J. Sunshine House, Nelson Street, on Thursday,.when the hall was tastefully decorated by Mrs. Rainger, "In the absence of Mrs. Ferner, Mrs. Pratt took the chair. The plans for the forthcoming "Forget-me-not"- '-Day on Friday next, May 30, were explained. It was stated that for the stations many sympathisers had offered their services; 2500 forget-me-nots had been made under the direction of Mrs. Neilson and the motor car emblems were in the hands of Mrs. Tattersfield. The Sunshine School grounds were being filled in to form courts, which would be in constant use both for the children of •. the Sunshine School and "those of the Community 'Club. It was emphasised that pjayground space was especially needed in this particular centre.' The Sunshine School was gradually acquiring its full complement of delicate children. These comprised children from hospitals who -were recovering from illness, patients from doctors and from schools. It was hoped hot lunch for the delicate'little ones would eventually bo provided. Alterations were necessary at the health camp at Waiheke to make it more complete for the 'coming season. A farewell concert and social, arranged by the • Henderson School Committee, was tendered to Mr. F. J. McKay,.the headmaster' of the Henderson school, in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. Upwards of 400 people were present.' A programme of musical and elocutionary items was as follows:—Pianoforte solos, Miss Elya Skinner; vocal solos, Mesdames Hutchinson and Parry, Miss Stagpoole and Messrs.' Hocken and J. Collings; humorous recitations, Miss Phyllis Duekering and Mr. J. Finlayson. Miss Elva Skinner was accompanist. Mr. McKay has been in charge of the Henderson school for the last six years, and is now being transferred to the Napier Street school, Auckland. During his stay in the district he has carried out his duties in such a manner as to establish the most friendly relations between himself and the school children, the parents and the successive Committees with whom he has had to work, and to mark their sense of this the committee and the parents have jointly presented him with a watch, and Mrs. McKay with a rose bowl. In making the presentation, the chairman of the school committe, Mr. Win. Haythornthwaite, referred specially to Mrs. McKay and the valuable assistance she had rendered in carrying out various social functions in connection with' the school.
