ITALY AND PARITY.
Loftier Than Arithmetical
Calculations.
ELIMINATION OF DISTRUST.
ROME, May 11
A long awaited speech by Signor Grandi on the subject of the London Naval Conference was heard with rapt attention by a , crowded Chamber of Deputies yesterday.
Signor Grandi said Italy was convinced that naval parity was something loftier than a mere arithmetical calculation. . "We regard it as a principle of international morality based_ on mutual confidence and the elimination of distrust/' he said. "It is on this principle that the two most fully armed naval Powers—Britain and the United States —have reached an agreement.
"If that agreement is extended to other nations it will be the beginning of a new era of international relationship. The London Conference disposed of two calumnies, namely, (1) that Italy is pervaded by a bellicose spirit and (2) that Italy is vacillating in- her-inter-national actions."
Signor Grahdi concluded by stating that he refused to think a naval agreement with France was impossible.
