CATHOLIC COLLEGE.
IfEW-ZEAiAND BORN PRIESTS
FUNDS FOR EXTENSION.
The Catholic Church in New Zealand has now reached a stage in its development when it is not necessary to bring out clergy from older countries whero the Church is well established. The Rev. Dr. Buxton, administrator of St. Patrick's Cathedral, stated in a sermon yesterdav that Archbishop Redwood had recently informed him that he believed all future requirements wouM be supplied by New Zealand-born priests. At the present time there are over 70 students training for the priesthood at Holy Crosi College, MosgieL and there are "other students preparing for ordination at the Marist Fathers' seminary at Greenmeadows, Hawke's Bay. About 17 of the students at Holy Cross College are from the Auckland district.
Two Tears ago a movement was inaugurated by the heirarchy of the Catholic Church in New Zealand to raise funds for extensive additions to Holy Cross College. This appeal has been launched on a Dominion-wide basis, and already thousands of pounds have been subscribed. Priests who were trained at Holy Cross College have taken the appeal in hand, and a systematic parishparish canvass has been made. Next Sunday Father Collins and his coworkers, specially selected to make the appeal, will preach in the cathedral and other city churches, and the collections will be made on the following Sunday. So far they have received a most gratifying response, tiny parishes in the country districts where there are only a few Catholic families having subscribed very generously, in some cases to the extent of £1000 each. The college at Mosgiel was founded in 1900. since when it has sent forth over 70 priests to preach the Gospel and administer the sacraments in New Zealand. There is no shortage of New Zealand-born candidates for the priesthood, and it is believed that, if Holy Cross College can be enlarged, a greater number of students can be trained so that the increasing demands of a growing Church may be met.
