WIN FOR GRAMMAR.

For the curtain-raiser at Eden Par!* Marists made a creditable showing against a heavier and more experienced team. Although Grammar held the upper hand most of the time the game was never o: csided, the younger team sticking to a hard contract with commendable persistency. The big white forwards were not long in breaking through the defence, and L. Knight led the way for P. Potter to secure the first try. Tykes then took a hand, and smart work amongst the backs found Grammar out-manoeuvred and Cornthwaite made an opening for Johnston to score. Cornth waite converted. Marists continued to hold the big fellows back until well into the second period, when the steady pressure of the Grammar pack commenced to wear them down. The white forwards were well supported in the rearguard by Garlick, Weir and Wilson. Two tries were scored by li. Knight and one each by Garlick and AVilson. The last was a spectacular run in which the Grammar wing showed pace and determination. Of five tries scored bv Grammar not one was converted, a very pitiable record on a day when conditions were particularly favourable. However, this very pronounced weakness was partly compensated for in another. direction The whites having been awarded a penalty, Mathieson, from weil back in the field drop kicked well and truly over the bar, and by a curious coincidence We Ir, >>nin<r criTDn ji sin-inn r

Marists were unfortunate In being without the services of Swin Hadley, which meant that the opposition had the best of the scrums. Corner fed his backs well, and only the plucky tackling of the Tykes" rearguard saved a cricket score. Conway got through a lot of useful work, and so also did Cornthwaite and Johnston. Loombe did not handle as well as usual, and Kirton was weak on the win?. Grammar ~j* Marists 5 Captain J. G. C. Wales was referee.
