THE CONCLUDING DAY.

AURORA BOREALIS, WINS STEEPLES. CHOPIN TAKES DAVIDSON. LATAKIA SURPRISES IN BOROUGH. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") HAWERA, Saturday. The Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting was concluded to-day in mild, sunny weather. The totalisator handled £18,340, an increase of £172 oyer the second day last year. For the two clays the total was £36,378, an increase of £265, • Won All the Way. The Hack Sprint was won all the way by Paiko. From No. 1 position at the barrier he was. attended in the running by Gowanlea, Tentcall, Pateroa and Royal Finance. Patearoa challenged in the straight, but Paiko hung on to beat him by a head. Royal Finance, who wac a solid favourite, was just over a length away, with Tentcall well up fourth. Then came Ben Hur, Adventus, Gowanlea and Statuary. The winner won nicely, and was capably handled by young Gerrand. Royal Finance again had every chance. Patearoa and Tentcall ran good races. Statuary was never prominent. Second Again. The favourite, Glenstar, had again to put up with second place in the hurdles after a good race. Air Force, Whisogne and Glenstar was the order in running, with Royal Acre handy. Royal Acre went to the front five furlongs from home, and turned into the straight clear of Air Force, Glenstar and Whisogne. Royal Acre cleared the last fence safely, and won by a length from Glenstar, who beat Air Force by four lengths. Whisogne was fourth, followed by Whenuamii and Vivo. The winner gave an improved showing, and attoned for his bad luck the first day. Glenstar was pulled in behind as against the first day's tactics. He pulled hard against the restraint, but' jumped well, and on the whole he was probably unlucky not to win. Nothing, else had any chance. The Steeplechase.

Aurora Borealis, ridden a much better race than on the first day, scored a comfortable win in the steeplechase. Waitaunaha made the early running with Airtight and Diana's Lad handy. Waitaunaha £an over a lot of ground, and was displaced from the lead down the back by Airtight, who went on from Diana's Lad and Aurora Borealis. The last-named was in charge two fences from home, and won by two lengths from Diana's Lad, who beat Airtight by six lengths. Waitaunaha was fourth, and a long way back came Democratic and Brigadier Bill. Maidos fell at the fence entering the straight the first time, and Maunga tossed his rider at the brush after having gone only half way. Nothing had any chance with the winner over the concluding stages. Diana's Lad and Airtight ran up to form, ,but Waitaunaha should have done better. Birkbeck weighed out, but was withdrawn owing to soreness. A Fine Sprinter. Lady Quex, with Gray up, was made a firm favourite for the open sprint, and she scored a decisive win. Kiosk got badly off, Benzora showing out with Te Atiawa, and leading down the back from Llanore, Melissa, Lady Quex and Gold Dawn, with Atholspcar well back. Benzora and Te Atiawa led round the turn and into the straight from Melissa, Lady Quex, Llanore, Town Bird, Gold Dawn and Hopwood. Lady Quex was the winner a furlong from home, and she Avon by a length from Hopwood, who got up to beat Melissa by a head. Llanore was fourth, followed by Te Atiawa, Atholspear, Gold Dawn and Benzora. "The winner outclassed her opponents and put up a. solid performance. Hopwood improved by his race, and will not be long. Atholspear was outpaced all the way, but he had made up a lot of ground at the finish. Valstreet Wins. . Blue Paper started a hot order in the Hack Scurry, but after having every chance she put up a very weak finish. Valstreet, Moatoa, and Blue Paper, and Patearoa, was the early order, but Blue Paper was clear across the top and.into the straight. Here Valstreet challenged, and soon put the issue beyond doubt, Avinning by two lengths from Patearoa, A\ho beat Blue Paper by a length. Rule Britannia Avas fourth, followed by Annoyer, Win Acre and Moatoa. The winner gave some trouble at the post, but she got aAvay Avell, and it proved a good thing for her. Blue Paper is not very eolid. Davidson Handicap. Chopin surprised the majority of backers when he won the Davidson Handicap, but he scored Avithout any fluke. Silvermine was a hot favourite, and he had' every chance, being Avell placed all the way, but failed to finish on. Just So made the pace from The Swell, Yoma, Silvermine and Chopin. This Avas the order all the Avay to the turn, Avhcie Ruanui had become more prominent. Once in line The Swell and Chopin forged through, and Chopin finished best to win by a neck, The Swell beating Mountain Heath by two lengths. Just So Avas fourth, followed by Ruanui, Yoma and Manly. Silvermine Avas one of the first horses beaten. Chopin Avas excellently handled by young Cerrand. The Savcll Avas consistent, but again not quite good enough. Mountain Heath came from a long Avay back. The Final Event.

Goldlike (£566), Merry Melody ( £539) and Brilliant Light ( £438) were most fancied for the Borough Hack in a big pool. Latakia was quickest to begin from Brilliant Light, Joyspear and Merry Melody. At the five furlongs Latakia was still in command, with Protoleer, Remora, Brilliant Light and Joyspear following in order. Latakia was first into the straight, being two lengths ahead of Brilliant Light, and then came Protoleer, Remora, Joyspear and Goldlike. In the run home Latakia beat Wcrata l».v n head, and then came Joyspear, a length away. Brilliant Light was fourth and Crenna Town fifth.
