CUP CHALLENGE FIXTURES. AUCKLAND SELECTORS APPOINTED. MARIST-KINGSLAND PROTEST. The need for staging the Northern Union Challenge Cup matches before June 14, the date of the inter-island fixture, wae urged upon the management committee of the A.R.L last evening by Messrs. C. A. Snedden (president) and James Carlaw, on behalf of the New Zealand League. It was emphasised that, owing to the early selection of the team going to Australia, these matches would assist the selector to see Northland and South Auckland players. Canterbury was not likely to challenge this season, observed Mr. Snedden. It was subsequently decided to comply with the request of the deputation, the challenge fixtures to be arranged as soon as possible. Messrs. J. Clarke, H. Avery and E. K. Asher were appointed selectors of the Auckland League. Other names submitted to the ballot were those of Messrs. A. McClymont, W. J. Davidson and B. Longbottom. The notice of motion steking the Appointments Board to carry out its duties of examining, grading, and appointing referees, in accordance with the purpose of. its creation, was submitted, arising from discussion on referees at last meeting. Mr. Stallworthy, who was appointed as the League's representative on the board, attended and explained his regret that he had been somewhat misrepresented. He had placed his car at the disposal of other members of the 'board to visit city and surburban grounds this yea. Although tthe resolution placed him in a somewhat awkward position, he was still prpared to act and carry out the wishes of the League. (Applause). Transfers were granted as follows: — Seniors: G. Surtees, from Richmond to Ellerslie; L. J. Cocks, City to Newton; F. H. Webberley, City to Marists; Wm. Johnson, Ellerslie to Newton. Senior B: D. Watson, Parnell to Newton. Second grade: W. J .Dyer, Newton to Richmond. Third Intermediate: Akarana to .Parnell senior B.

Brisk discussion was caused by an application of the Richmond Club to regrade Patterson, who has played in two senior games this season, to B o-rade It was contended by various delegates that this practice should, not be countenanced as it was not fair to other clubs. If Patterson could not 'be found a place in Richmond seniors, as asserted, he should be made available for other clubs who could do with his services.. The application was refused. Devonport asked for a ruling* on the position, of a junior player named Oliphant, who, after having played for North Shore, went over to Rugby Union, subsequently playing for the Hornby Club in Christohurch without having been reinstated. The player desired to again play League. Permission to play was granted. The Judicial Committee upheld the appeal of the Kingsland-Athletic Club against Marist Old Boys for playing Munro, a third grade player, for whom •the required transfer had pot been sanctioned. Mr. Gregory, the Marist delegate, advised that his club was carrying the appeal to the New Zealand Council. The match was played on Saturday week and was won by Marists by 16—13. Strong objection to the' playing of senior matches at the Domain, and thereby depriving Carlaw Park of revenue, was made, and it was stated that the Ponsonby v. Ellerslie contest attracted over 2000 spectators to the Domain on Saturday. A motion to shift the Kingsland v. Newton match from there to Carlaw Park this week was lost by nine votes to eight. The secretary reported his Excellency the Governor-General and party would attend Carlaw Park for the PonsonbyCity match on Saturday.

The Auckland Rugby League senior B grade competition was advanced a further stage on Saturday when close and interesting results were a feature. The splendid game between Point Chevalier and Mount Albert perhaps provided most interest. Suburban followers were confident that the new club, Mount Albert, would do well in its initial senior match. The most sanguine, however,

I were delighted when Point Chevahtv I only defeated the now club by a margin I of two points. With any luck Mount. I Albert might easily have been good wuiiners. The result, however, is pleasm= | to followers of the game in Mount j Albert, where splendid support .s assured. At Mangere the local thirteen were successful in beatingthe yoiithful Rich- • mond team by 11 points to 3. Parnell were unfortiuiate against Otahuliu in so much as the magpies lost two good players through injunes. , result favoured Otahuliu by 11 points to Splendid ground conditions prevailed at Mangere, and the Maoris showed improved form. Richmond lacked expenence, especially the forwards, who were much lighter than their burly opponents. 1 The backs were better matched, I lie Wilson brothers, however, proved- brilliant on attack, and repeatedly placed Mangere in good positions. Jack Wilson was particularly good, and easily the best back. Ragge and Lawless played splendidly for Richmond. This pair will develop into good forwards. Dyer showed a lot of pace on the wing. He is a promising player. Farrell, at centre, was perhaps the best of the backs. Lee was L weak spot' in the five-eighths. His handling was uncertain, and often got Richmond into trouble. A great battle between two wellmatched sets of forwards saw Otahuhu just beat Parnell. At times, the front dmsion staged a hot battle, and a li £ unnecessary feeling was shown. Parnell were strengthened by the inclusion of Ritchie and Veart, two foi - 'wards who worked really hard. - Biockliss also did his share in the loose. Campney scored a nice try for Parnell, but was unlucky in having to retire. Kerr played a sound game, but passed wildly at times. Parnell's attack was strengthened by playing Alderton behind the scrum. He made some clever openings for Anderson and McLaren. Good play by Duncan, Monoghan and McLaren successfully carried Point 1 Chevalier to victory against Mount Albert. The trio were superior on attack and their experience often got the more younger players in difficult positions. Sturtees proved a great battler among a hard-worked pack. English Cup to Widnes. On Saturday for the first time in the history of the game Widnes won the English Cup before a huge crowd at Wembley. For New Zealanders the re-

suit has a tinge of regret because the defeated side, St. Helens, contains Hall, Hutt and Hardgrave, of Auckland. Ihe match must have been a great football spectacle. It transpires that after the semi-final draw of five all between St. Helens and Wigan, the former won the replay by B—3. The same day Warrington, whose breakaway is Seeling, son of the New Zealand All Black, drew 11 all with Widnes. The following week two significant results emphasised that the cup issue would bo a thrilling encountei. St. Helens beat Broughton Rangers, who star Trevor Hanlon, by 31—17, and Widnes trounced Wigan by 12—0. The victory of Widnes is all the more creditable because it is purely a district club. The curtain on the English Rugby League season will fall next Saturday with the championship final between Huddersfield and Leeds.
