LAND SETTLEMENT.
Mr. Holdsworth is, right. We are a young food-producing country and it is sheer folly to try. and bolster up our secondary industries by high tariffs, while every year sees, inore . and more primary producers walk off the land.; There,is a lot of waste land about producing ' nothing, and it would be good business/to / let prospective settlers have, a few acres' of'/ it for nothing and even finance them for the first year or two, as we would be increasing' our production and exports. West spent ten millions on such a scheme, and it has proved good business. We will not glut: the English market, and England takes all oilr butter, wool, meat,.etc., etc., without tax. We do not take her exports to ..us free; we tax ' ■. them. Australia has foolishly prohibited many." articles and heavily increased .the tariff on; - others. It will not improve the deplorable - position Australia is now,in; it will make it worse. The British .Labour Government has a: policy vastly ■ superior, and .diametrically:" opposed to the Labour Government in Austra-. lia. • V- E. STEVENSONVy
