MY HOLLYHOCKS.
Have you seen my hollyhocks In the patch of purple phlox? There is magic in the town. When you dig it two spades down; When you garden refuse lay Underneath the broken clay; Wliei/ you run a hidden drain From the roof and use the rain. Have you seen my hollyhocks? In the patch of purple phlox? Dusk and dawn I stalk in turn Snail and caterpillar worm. Puzzled menfolk stand to stare At my hollyhocks so fair. All of them so slim and , high, Rosy as a windy sky. Ladies seem to like them too, Using sunshades quite their hue, Lasses make their summer frocks Gay, like all my hollyhocks. Even children plain or dear, Grow bewitched and trespass near, Pleading they are forced to feel If my hollyhocks are real. —ELIZABETH M. GOLDSMITH. Napier.
