WHERE FILM PROFITS GO.
STATE'S BIG SHARE. „ Speaking at the annual general meeting of Amalgamated Pictures, Ltd., Mr. Stuart F. Doyle stated that for every £10,000 distributed to the shareholders ,£14,000 was paid in taxation, exclusive of rates and duty on film rent. New amusement taxes had been imposed in New South Wales and in Victoria, so that the percentage of taxation would be again higher this year. In regard to statements that America lifted huge sums from Australia for film purchase, during 1929 only 16 per cent of the gross takings of theatres went out of Australia. In 1929 £1,123,200 was sent out of Australia, £1,175,000 was paid in direct wages, and £1,190,000 was paid away to Australian firms for general work and supplies. There is not one theatre in Australia, he added, owned or controlled by American or foreign capital, nor is any American money invested in any Australian picture theatre company.
