THE AUTUMN MEETING.

EASTER ANR BRIGHTON. THE HANDICAPS REVIEWED. The weights for the first day of the Auckland autumn meeting liave been declared by Mr. F. McManemin. and most interest will centre in the Easter Handicap and the Brighton Hurdle Race. The adjustments are on such a scale that they should ensure good fields. The Easter Handicap. Pegaway (9.5) heads the Easter Handicap, and this weight is not out of the way for such a good horse. He finished second to Royal Doulton in the Summer Cup, one mile and a quarter, with 9.8, and subsequently was second in the" Paul Memorial Handicap, of similar distance, at Taranaki, -with 9.9, Corinax beating him by a neck. That was his last start. Paganelli (9.4) has 31b less than he was awarded in the I Thompson Handicap, in which he did not start. He won the Thompson Handicap with, 5.12 laet year, while this season he has shown up well in sprint handicaps with much more weight. He ran second iii the Stewards' Handicap at Ricearton with 9.11, after winning over six furlongs at Trentham with 9.8. He was unplaced 5a the Egmont Cup with 5.12, but won the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, with. 9.12. Toxeuma beat •him by a head for second place in the Manawatu Stakes, six furlongs, when in receipt of 21b. Now they meet on level terms in the Easter. Paganelli is not out of it. Toxeuma (9.4) is a very solid customer, and lie will have some friends. He has raced most consistently this season up to a mile and a quarter. He had- 5.(3 when he ran Paganelli to a head in the Shorts' Handicap, six furlongs, at Trentham, and subsequently . with 8.11 he beat a good field in the Criterion Handicap at Ricearton. At the Auckland summer meeting he was second to Hunting Cry in the King's Plate, the mile being run in 1.38 2-5. He had 9.0 on that occasion. He was given 9.4 in the Thompson Handicap, but did not start. At Awapuni he ran second in the Manawatu Stakes with 9.5, finishing a head behind Cimabue and a similar distance in front of Paganelli. He will have some support if started. The Winter Cup Winner. Historic also 'has 9.4. He* finished third in the Awapuni Gold Cup and also won the Masterton Cup with 9.7, but the field was not a very strong one. However, lie is in form now, and as he won the-Winter Cup, one mile, at Ricca-rton laet August, he must be considered. Vertigern (8.12) finished third in the Thompson Handicap with. 8.4, and subsequently won the Awapuni Gold Cup with 9.2. He should have a chance with a rise of 81b. Bright Glow (8.11) finshed second in the Thompson Handicap with 5.2 last season and won the Easter Handicap with 5.4. She was handicapped in the Thompson Handicap last month at 8.12, but did not start. Bright Glow has run well this season, being second in the Wellington Cup with 7.13, and winning the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, with 8.8, while just previously she won the Egmont and Stratford Cups. This mare should again be very hard to dispose of. Great Charter (8.6) failed in the Thompson Handicap with 21b less, but on the second day finished second in«the Hutt Handicap -with 9.7, equal tr> 8.7. He is a possibility. Silvermine (8.6) is called upon to carry 41b more than in the Thompson Handicap, for which he did not accept. Subsequently at Awapuni he ran The Swell to a nose in the Prince of Wales' Handicap, nine furlongs. This was a good effort, and if the track is a bit yielding he should go well. Mervette (8.4) was second fn this race last season, but with a stone less. She ran in the Thompson Handicap with 8.8, but was never in the hunt. It is stated that she was not iherself on that occasion. Mervette would only need to be in her best form to be troublesome. Paitonu's Recent Fora. Paitonu (8.3) won the Thompson Handicap with 7.7, and ran a good race in the Autumn Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, with 8.2, finishing fourth. _ At Awapuni ihe was given 8.6 in the Prince of Wales Handicap and again finished a good fourth. He is. now meeting Silvermine on 61b tetter "terms than he did in. tie latter event; Paitonu would onlv need to reproduce that form to be in the money. White Fang (8.0)- ran his best race for some time when he won t'.ie Suburban Handicap, six furlongs, at the last meeting at Trentham. He was a bit on that occasion. However, there is no doubt about his ability to run a good mile. Ceremony (8.0) finished fourth in the open sprint with a stone more on the first day of the Manawatu meeting. That was ihis first race for some time, and though lie disappointed on the second day, he should •be improved by Easter. He will need to be very fit'to beat some of those above him. Royal Doulton (8.0) is a solid mare and is not at all badly, treated. Richfield (7.10) looke a very likely sort among the lighter weighted division. He can go a good mile. Van and Hunting Day, who are both weighted at 7.9, are a couple of good rthree-year-olde. Vali won the St. Leger at Trentham. and lhaa shown to advantage in mile events. Hunting Day has been improving all the time and has won over seven furlongs. His performance in annexing the Railway Handicap at Trentham last month was most impressive, and he will be one of the favourite division if started, for he has done practically everything asked of him this seasun. Eager Rose won the Liverpool Handicap, one mile, at the spring meeting at Ellerslie, and at the summer meeting on the same course she accounted for the Christmas Handicap, one mile. She is pretty useful at this distance. Of i.Tie other's Prince Val, Branson, Tancriri and Kingfield appeal most. Just now a few that may be fancied are: Toxeuma, Hunting Day, Pegaway, Silver Mine, Bright Glow,' Eager Rose and Richfield. The Brighton Huraies. King's Guard has been given 12.0 in the Brighton Hurdles, which, is a verysolid impost, but all the same he has earned it. At the Auckland summer meetizi"- he won the Grafton Hurdle , Race with 9.12, the Ponsonby Hurdle Race with 10.7, the New Year Hurdle Race with 11.7, and was second in the Auckland Hurdle Race with 12.7. Since then he has shown good.form oa the i

f flat by winning the High-weight Handij cap at Takapuna and the Matainata Cup. Re<l Fuchsia (11.5) was second in die Westmere Hurdles at Wanganui with 12.5. He started on the first day of the recent Manawatu meeting, being fourth in the Karere Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, with 11.11. He should go well. Elicit (11.1) was second in the Kairanga Hurdles, of similar distance, with 11.7. This was his first race for some time, and he is sure to be in demand if started. The event was cut out in record time. Wiltshire (10.10) has not raced for some ■time, and the same remark applies to Bright Land (10.10) and Mangani (10.C). The latter won the Grand National Hurdle Race last August, and it seems rather hard on Bright Land to ask him to concede 41b to Mangani. Pouri (10.4) won'the Manawaru Hurdles, one mile and. three-quarters, at the recent Te Aroha meeting, which was 'his only start this season. He showed signs of lameness after that race, and was still capable of a good deal of improvement. If produced next Saturday week he should go well. Democratic (10.4) has proved himself a good hurdler this season. He won a double at Wanganui over a mile arid three-quarters, and carried 11.1 on the last, occasion. Prince Lu (10.2) was second to King's Guard ! in the Grafton and Ponsonby Hurdle Kaees at Ellerslie, while Roman Abbey ran second in the Great Northern Hurdle Race to Mister Gamp. He had 9.0 on that occasion and now has 10.2. Kawini (10.2) must be considered, for he has shown recently by running second in the High-weight Handicap at Franklin that he still retains his dash. King's Jest (9:13) only made his appearance over hurdles recently. He was narrowly beaten in each of his starts at Napier Park, and only has to jump to be troublesome. He was a useful horse on the flat. The Lamb (9.13) has proved himself over hurdles, and the recent racing he has had should see him at his best. Oraeo (0.9) has won four events out of five starts tins season. He beat Red Fuchsia in the Karere Hurdles, one mile and three, quarters, at -the recent Manawatu meeting and ran the distance in record time. "Of the others Glenotus, Star Comet and Glena Bay may be the best. The principal selections just now may be: Elicit/Roman Abbey, Kawini, Red Fuchsia, . Onieo, King's Guard and King's Jest. . I
