WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Women's Institute Mrs. J. Wilson Avas appointed to represent Opotiki. at the Bay of Plenty gr.oup meetings. A reading was given by.Mrs. Neilson from "Sally in Rhodesia," and two vocal items by Mrs. J. D. Fisher were much appreciated. MANAWAHE. Mrs. Rendall presided at the last meeting of- the Manawahe Women's Institute. Mrs. Gomez gave a demonstration on • paper flower making. A competition for the best child's hat Avas won by Mrs. Bowxlen, who submitted a pretty organdie sun bonnet. During last month, a- special meeting was held on behalf of Mrs. Wetherhall, voluntary organiser, who had arranged a visit to the institute. Mrs. Wetherhall gave a demonstration on soft toy making and the institute decided to purchase a set of the. patterns. It was also decided that the institute joint the Bay of Plenty group in order to further its interests. Mrs. Wetherhall gave an interesting talk on the obstetrical appeal. MATATA. A meeting was held by the Rangitihi Maori Associated . Women's Institute, Matata, at Mrs. Marr's residence, last week. Those present were: —Mesdames F. Burt, Webb, Marr, Chaytor, Moengaroa, Olsen, Fraser, Misses J. Freeman, M. Papuni, P. Chaytor, M. Karepe, A. Maretini, 0. and M. Marks. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Burt took the chair, and welcomed those present and remarked on the ideals of the institute, which existed for the benefit of the race loyalty, ■; democracy, education, co-operation and citizenship. The main object was to revive old Maori arts and crafts. A demonstration of rou-rous (baskets made out of rough flax) Avas shown. Everyone joined in a chorus of "Pokare-kare Ana" and the girls performed an action Avaiata, "E Pari Ra." Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Marr, Olsen and Chaytor.
