SAMOA NEARER NORMAL
TRUCE BROUGHT GOOD RESULTS.
DEFENCE MINISTER SANGUINE.
NATIVES EXPECTED TO RESUME WORK.
From statements made this morning by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence, who returned by the Tofua from Samoa, and by passengers who arrived by the vessel, it is evident that the trouble in the mandated territory is on the wane. The Minis-ter is sanguine of the future and satisfied with the present position.
As the result of conferences between high chiefs and representatives of the New Zealand Government, the "wanted" men have voluntarily surrendered to the police and the natives have dispersed to their villages to once again pursue their peacetime avocations. Copra exports have declined during recent times, but the Hon. Mr. Cobbe is of opinion that the Samoans will soon be hard at work in an endeavour to build up the export trade in this commodity on which the prosperity of the territory so largely depends.
