GIRL STEALS GRAMOPHONE. PLEDGED IN ANOTHER NAME. A girl, aged 22, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, appeared at the Police Court this morning, when she pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a gramophone valued at £14. . Chief Detective Hammond said accused bought the machine in March of last year on the hire-purchase plan, paying 3/0 per week for it. She had paid only £2 off when she sold i£ for £3. "The worst feature of the case is that she gave the name of a girl friend when she pledged it at a dealer's," said Mr. Hammond. "Accused is working in a Dalmatian boardingliouse and is heading downhill fast." "Well, Major Gordon will have to head her off," said Mr. F. K. Hunt. Major Gordon thought that the girl required to be placed under some supervision. The magistrate placed the girl on probation for two years and ordered her to make restitution.
