CARRYING ON.
PEOPLE OF MURCHIS.ON. SHOW HELD AS USUAL. MINISTER'S CONGRATULATIONS. t (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NELSON, this day. . ' The Hon. G. W. Forbes, who was enthusiastically welcomed, opened the Murcliison Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Saturday. The attendance was amost as large as it was last y£ar, before the earthquake.
Mr. Forbes complimented the people upon their decision to-hold the show this year, notwithstanding all kheix difficulties. He said he felt sure the people had derived much encouragement from assistance the people of the Dominion had given them during their time of trial. It was always heartening to know, in time of trouble or distress, that others were ready to lend a helping hand. He realised it would be impossible completely to restore the damage done; and where there had been bereavement through earthquake the loss could never be compensated for. On his way up, said Mr. Forbes, he had noticed the railway works in progress. Sir Joseph Ward, being a business man, recognised that disconnected lines were of little benefit, and it was only by the opening up of those sections and completing, through lines that /they could be made to pay. He gave an assurance that during the coming winter the number of men employed on these works would be considerably increased. Mr. Forbes again complimented the people, and the show officials on their decision to carry on, which was typical of the best British spirit. To-day the Minister was accorded a civic reception by a large gathering at Motueka. He visited fruit and tobacco farms, and he will return to Wellington this evening.
