REDUCED TRAIN FARES.
ROTORUA AND WAIUKU,
NEW SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED,
With the idea of meeting acute motor competition, the Railways Department has reduced the return fares between Auckland or Newmarket and Rotorua, and also all fares between Auckland or Newmarket, and stations on the Waiuku branch line.
On the 'Rotorua" line, the reductions amount to 5/ on first and second-class return fares. At present the fares -for the 171 miles are: —First-class, 52/10; second-class, 36/. The new fare's are:— First-class, 47/10; second-class, 31/. Single fares are as before. Between Newmarket and Rotorua, the schedule return fares of 51/10 and 35/4 have been reduced to 47/10 and 30/6. Between Auckland and Waiuku branch stations, the fares have been' reduced by about one-third, and a small reduction has also been made in the single fares. The following are figures for the return journey between Auckland and Waiukii:—First-class return, 13/, reduced to 9/6; second-class return, 8/10, G/3. First-class single, 6/6, 6/3; second class single, 4/5, 4/.
Similar reductions have been made to journeys between Newmarket and other stations on the branch line. The amended regulations also remove the 14 days limit' on advance bookings. It is now possible to buy tickets, sleeping berths, and seat reservation "on the lay or in advance of the day the passenger desires to travel." This regulation applies not only to officered stations, but also to city or central railway booking offices and authorised booking agencies.
