DEAD UNDER LORRY.
MAN FOUND NEAR WELLSFORD VEHICLE OVERTURNED ON ROAD. DISCOVERY BY TWO WORKMEN. A carrier in the employ of the Public Works Department, Mr. Louis Ramsbottom, a married man, aged about 45, living at Warkworth, was found dead, pinned under his overturned lorry, about seven o'clock last evening, on the side of the road between Warkworth and Wayby. A motorist passed the vehicle on the roadside a mile or so south of Wellsford. He knew it belonged to Mr. Ramsbottom but, thinking some minor mishap only had occurred, and that the driver had left the lorry temporarily to get help to set it again on the road, the motorist did not stop his car to investigate. He went on about six miles to Te Hana, where he informed some workmen, friends of Mr. Ramsbottom, of the accident. They hurried to the spot in another lorry, and they found Mr. Ramsbottom lying dead, with the whole weight of the vehicle across his back. It is thought that death must have been instantaneous. The road at that spot is on a bend, and it is believed that the lorry left the metal, for there are skid marks for about 30 yards on the clay, and, striking a ditch some 12in deep, overturned.
Mr- Eamsbottom was a carrier, and for about a month, past had. been carting road metal to the main northern highway extension at Topuni, between Wellsford and Warkworth. It is believed he had gone to Warkworth for the week-end, and was returning again for work on Monday. His wife for the past 18 months has been in Auckland, but happened to be in TV arkworth at the time of the fatality. He was wellknown in Wellsford, his people being among the first settlers in the district. His father lives at Wellsford. He leaves a familv of four.
