OBITUARY.

MRS. J. H. HODGE. The death took place at Thames on March 15, at the age of 76 years, after a protracted illness, of Mrs. J. H. Hodge, one of the oldest residents there. She was the wife of Mr. J. H. Hodge, who is chairman of Thames district school committee, and a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity. The late Mrs. Hodge was born at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, and came to New Zealand with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kay, in the ship Ernestine, which arrived at Auckland in 1864. Mr. Kay went to Thames to erect the first mining battery for the Shotover Company. Mr. and Mrs. Hodge were married at the Presbyterian Church, Thames, by the late Rev. James Hill in 1875. She is survived by her husband and four daughters. MRS. ARCHDALE TAYLER. By the death of Mrs. Archdale Tayler the musical section of Auckland has lost one of its most valued members. Born in Auckland 63 years ago, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. J. G. Culpan, Sirs. Tavler lived her whole life in Auckland, and she was associated for many years with the activities of her husband, the late Mr.. Archdale Tayler, whose work with the Auckland Amateur Opera Club is well remembered by the theatre-going public of the time. • Mrs. Tayler, who was the possessor of a very fine soprano voice, took a prominent pai't in musical affairs, particularly at the time when the late Herr Schmidt conducted the Auckland Choral Society, and for many years she sang soprano solos in most of the performances of oratorios. Latterly she had been vice-president of the Auckland Society of Musicians, a position which she relinquished shortly before her death. Mrs. Tayler had a wide circle of friends in Auckland, by whom her loss is keenly felt. She is survived by a son and two daughters.
