STREET FRUIT STALLS..

LET TO WHITE MEN.

COMPLAINT BY INDIANS.

SUGGESTION OF AUCTIONING.

A letter was recently sent to the Auckland City Council by Mr. Hall Skelton, on behalf of four Indians, complaining that their stalls were stopped in Wellesley Street and Victoria Street, but that subsequently a white man was given a license for both streets. Mr. Hall Skelton added that the question had also been raised that some of the best stands had been let permanently to white men. He asked that the stands be auctioned each year.

The chief traffic inspector reported that the statement regarding the stands in 'Wellesley Street and Victoria Stieet West was incorrect, as the stand in Wellesley Street had never been occupied by an Indian/, and the stand in Victoria Street on the northern side was eliminated by the council on account of the complaint made by shopkeepers and also on account of traffic conditions not permitting same The council had previously considered the suggestion .of auctioning the stands, but it was resolved that tha present system should remain. White men occupied four stands in Belgium Street, France Street, Wellesley Street, West and Wyndham Street.

At last night's meeting of the City Council the matter was referred to the Legal and By-laws Committee for a report. Mr. Hall Skelton M - as invited to be present at the meeting.

At a later stage in the meeting a complaint was read regarding the competition of the street stall at the corner of Karangahape Road and Edinburgh Street, and, on the recommendation of the Legal and By-laws Committee, it was decided to discontinue the stall site.

City Chambers, Limited, made an objection to the licensing of fruit stalls in Victoria Street West outside its building. It was stated that congestion was caused, and the stalls had a detrimental effect on businesses carried on in the vicinity. The Legal and By-laws Committee recommended the discontinuance of fruit stall sites on the southern side of Victoria Street, and the recommendation was adopted.
