Y.W.C.A.
Several hundred girls, with their mothers and friends, attended the gymnastic demonstration at the Y.W.C.A. on Wednesday evening. The object of the demonstration was to give the girls of the city an idea of the scope of the gymnasium, dancing and sports training available at the Y.W.C.A. The programme, which had been arranged by Miss M. Tompkins, showed various classes at their first lessons. The rythmical swinging in most of the free standing gymnasium work was noted as a new feature. The excellent equipment of wall bars, the boom, vaulting and balancing apparatus was well demonstrated by members of the senior class, whose work was of a high standard. Gymnastics, country dancing and games were given by beginners' and children's classes. First lessons in swimming and life-saving were given by Miss Wills and invitations extended to all present ! .o attend swimming lessons given by her at the tepid baths. Girls from the Y.W.C.A. cricket team looked smart and business-like when a short theoretical practice was demonstrated. Madam". Edith Baird, who. is to conduct classes in classic and poetic dancing, as well as modern artistic physical culture, , gave a beautiful demonstration of her work. Miss Jean Begpr, general secretary, spoke shortly on the health and recreation classes to bo held this vear and announced that Miss Phyllis Phillips, gymnasium instructress, would be arriving from England next wpplc. _ A most enjoyable evening resulted in much enthusiasm and many enrolments for t/iR various classes.
