June 21, 23—Auckland T.C. Ilaroto brought off a surprise early in tlic season, but lias done very little racing sincc. The bay gelding is doing steady work and will be a competitor at the Thames meeting. J. McKendrick is again working Student Prince. The chestnut went wrong early in the season and had to be thrown out of work. He is not a bad sort of pacer and a likely one to win good money when right. J. O'Kane has Don Juan looking very well. The half-brother to Jewel Pointer has so far not been in the money in any of his races, but he is displaying more speed in his training. However, he is inclined to knock himself when going fast, and if his trainer can cure him of this he should get a race. Gumdigger, Pavlova, Mountain Princess and Parrish Belle have gone south to fulfil engagements at the Manawatu meeting to-morrow. All were in good 'order when they left and with ordinary luck should get expenses. After racing at Manawatu they will go on to Hastings for the Hawke's Bay meeting on Saturday. In winning a 4.40 class at Timaru on Saturday SalieiH, from a 4.44 mark went 4.38 1-5. The black gelding is in at New Brighton on Saturday on the limit of a 4.40 class, and he cannot be penalised. It looks as though V. Alborn should get the money again, although j the class is a bit better than he defeated at Timaru. There is very little doing at present at Epsom. A number of the horses that raced at the Otahuhu meeting are having a few days' spell, but next week should see those trainers with candidates engaged at the Thames meeting sending them along in earnest. There are plenty of horses about of the class catered for at country fixtures and the circuit of smalls this ' season ' should be very successful. The trotter Great Gold, in G. Webb's team, is showing improvement and is now trotting very solidly. He may not yet have sufficient win a race, hut he is going along right and before ■the season is out may be able to bring off a surprise in a slow trot at one of the country meetings. When first put into work Great Gold was prepared at the pacing gate, but Webb later decided that the horse would do better as a trotter. Twelve months ago Arachne won the Hawke's Bay Cup, but since then the Logan Pointer mare has consistently failed in her races. However, it was not that she did not posses? the pace, but because of her habit of standing on the mark that her defeats were brought about. On Saturday she is in the Hawke's Bay Cup again, being on 4.44 in a 4.47 class. Two miles may not suit her so well as a shorter distance, but even so should she go away right, she should win. Still she is so unreliable at the mark that backers will not support her with any degree of confidence. CANTERBURY NOTES. WORK AT NEW BRIGHTON. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. H. N. Clarke has Dorrie in work again. In a work-out during the Aveek at New Brighton, Dorrie gave evidence of being in good form. The pacer Blue Glen has never looked better than at present, and is doing well in her training work. Blue Glen is best over short courses, but is none too reliable in a race. W. Kerr has Avonwood in good shape. Up till recently he has done most of his racing over short distances, but last month at Addington, in- the Liverpool Handicap, he put up a fine performance, finishing fourth in a fast-run race. Avonwood was always in the lead and only failed in the concluding stages. He is improving in stamina. The pacer Hakari is in steady work at New Brighton tinder L. Davidson's charge. Hakari is a useful pacer who, however, is seen at his best on a big course. Dusolina looks none the worse for her racing at Motukarara, where she finished second to June Nordica in the mile and a half event. Dusolina had not been working well just prior to the meeting, and she found the last quartei of a mile troublesome. The Drusus filly looks like making a useful sort next season, as her training work this season has been interrupted owing to her accident. Kautoma is looking very well at present, and in a work-out at New Brighton during the week he showed capital form. L. Frost should win a race with the Harold Dillon pacer who, however, is a much better track performer than he is with the colours up. Kate Logan continues to train on satisfactorily. She has been very consistent this season over all distances. The Kaikoura-owned pacer Bicardo has left M. B. Edwards' stable and is now trained by his owner. Ricardo seems to pace much better on a grass track than on dirt. The three-year-old pacer, Desert Rey, who made his first appearance in the Juvenile Handicap at Addington last month, is going on satisfactorily in his training work under A. G. Wilson's charge at New Brighton. "Supervision" or "Washboard drudgery?" Make your choice; our earnest advice is get in No Rubbing Laundry Help and abolish "washboard drudgery."
