BYRD'S GRATITUDE.

Britain's Offer of Assistance in Antarctic. NEW ZEALAND'S KINDNESS. WASHINGTON, February 14. The State Department lias transmitted a message to the British Government from Rear-Admiral Byrd, thanking the Government for its offers of aid. The message runs in part: "I am eternally grateful and very thankful to have been made aware of the friendly concern of the nation to which Scott, Shackleton, Mawson and Evans belong, whose distinguished service always draws us the°most friendly and profound admiration of their leadership and abilities. "Wo have from all sides received evidence of the cordial interest of the British Empire in our own efforts. More particularly New Zealand has from the beginning extended to the expedition the utmost hospitality and courtesy. "While wo are not yet keenly apprehensive over our predicament, which is potentially q"uite serious, I naturally am attempting to leave undone nothing that can ensure the safety of my men." j 1 I
