SCHUBERT'S MODESTY.
Schubert died on November 19, 1828,. at the early age of 31 years. A book which was recently published shows him to have been a modest and engaging personality. When writing to Goethe to ask permission to set some of his songs to music arid dedicate them to him he spok<? of the-great honour it would-be if "His Excellency" would take notice of his "unworthy efforts," and added that such consideration would be "the proudest moment and event of his life.' Goethe's only acknowledgment of the, requgst was that "he had received from Vienna some settings of his songs by Franz Schubert."
