THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.
Seed of Cabbage and Cauliflowers should be sown. Shading with scrim will check the cabbage fly. [ ■ ' Celery can be planted; the earlier planted should be kept growing by waterings of artificial manure. Remove all lateral growths on the Celery plants, also any blighted leaves. A' spraying with lime sulphur would help to check the leaf spot. Clear away all spent crops, and prepare the ground for future crops. Sow Oats, Turnips, or some such crop for digging in green. This adds humus to the soil, and, supplemented by fertilisers, takes the place of stable manure. Runner Beans must be closely picked, and ample quantities of clear water and liquid manure supplied; if the vines are to keep on bearing. Tomatoes that were late planted are growing freely. Keep the plants free of lateral growths. Spray every ten days. Marrows and Pumpkins are showing signs of mildew; a spraying with lime and sulphur will check the trouble if it has not gone too far. There is a chance with the last'few fine days to get ahead of the weeds. No opportunity should be lost to get a clean up before autumn.
