RECORD RAINFALL.

SOAKING JANUARY. WORST FOR 46 YEARS. SIXTY POINTS PER DAY. The first month of this year has bccu one of frowning skies for Auckland, and the elements to-day are not.in promising mood for February. January was an abnormally wet period, the rainfall being 5.63 inches over the average for the month and 95 points over the highest previously recorded in 46 years. Rain fell on fourteen days, the maximum rainfall in any 24 hours being 1.74 inches on the 21st. The total for the month was 8.40 inches, or an average of 60 points per day. The barometer showed a mean for the month of 29.893 inches. The mean maximum temperature in the shade was 73 degrees (Fah.), and the mean minimum 60., The extreme maximum was 78 or; the 27th, the extreme minimum 53, and the average 65.5.
