LATE MR. NORMAN BURTON.
TRIBUTE BY ARCHBISHOP. "NOBLE SON OF THE CHURCH." At the service in St. George's Anglican Church, Epsom, yesterday which preceded the funeral of Mr. Norman E. Burton, Archbishop Averill paid a great tribute to the life and work of the deceased. Dr. Averill said, "The church on earth lias lost a faithful, a noble, and in many senses a unique son in Norman Burton. His 1 success in his profession as a journalist was due to his own ability, to the of his reading and study, and to his real broad-mindedness, his I being able to see ajl round a question. | Also, when it was necessary to engage in controversial matters, the greatness of Norman Burton was shown in the fact | that he was never known to hit below the belt. He had definite opinions, he was never afraid to express them, but he never did anything ungenerous. "The strength of Sir. Burton as a Christian journalist," added the speaker, "lay in the fact that he had a great knowledge of theological literature. As editor of the 'Church Gazette' Mr. Burton raised it to a standard that made it almost a model for the Southern Hemisphere. He put his great gifts at the disposal of the church. Perhaps the greatest thing in his life, however, was I the' wonderfully cahn resignation with ' which lie faced his end." The Archbishop then expressed sincere sympathy with the bereaved relatives. Assisting at the service were the Rev. J. L. Litt, vicar of St. George's, the Rev. John Cable,'vicar of Henderson, and the Rev. G. C. Cruicksliank, vicar of St. Mark's, Reniuera. The Archbishop conducted the service at Purewa.
