NOTES FROM TAKANINI.

CANDD3ATES FOR TAKAPUNA. , Two of ous two-year-olds- that will most likely be making their bow to ; the public ja,t, Takapuna are Smithfield and Topstar. Smithfield, although not a handsome fellow, knows how to gallop, and will, greatly improve with a race. Topstar has not been in work long but looks in great nick. The son of Sandstar will foe a* useful sort before the season is over. • Hard Words «nd Bells of Shandon have, in each of - their last two starts/ been in the money in better classes .than the Calliope Handicap at Takapuna, and it appears that the Takanini pair may take a lot' of heading off. It really depends: on the position at the. post in this case, and if one of this pair happen to draw close in then they will prove a tough proposition. . The Catmint—Lady Penury gelding is going along nicely, and in doing pace work down the straight and along'the back straight. has been showing himself to be a nice mover. He is very big at present, but should be moulded into shape in good time by his mentor, E. Pope. : •

That Principal may be useful "was the general opinion when he beat Imperial Prince last Tuesday morning over a nice working gallop of five furlongs. The son of Thespian and Royal Exchange was not expected to be a great proposition, but if he continues to make such good headway in- his work, then he may be found in the money before the season is ; over. The Snow King—Goldplane filly, Snowplane, ; has been going along nicely since Thames, and, although luck seems to have been against her on. several occasions this year,' she may be found' running an improved race ac Takapuna. In the Shade has not run a decent race since the N.Z. Qup! meeting, and consequently will have lost a lot of friends in the;Takapuna.CupV but I^;.Choucas, the second string> who is in on the.minimum,. may be found troublesome:- He has been working so well, and his second to Tanariri at Thames shows he has not lost form, and that his chance in the big race is by no means a hopeless one. , r Relation and Frothblower should, acquit themselves well in the Perry -Handicap, with pref erencefor the former.. Relation, who is by Chief \ Ruler—lmagination, opened his three-year-old career auspiciously at Masterton with a win in his iniiial outing.: j i f Havaspot was reharidicapped 121b in it'he Hauraki Hack Handicap at Takapuha 'for his- brilliant efforts at ;the recent Wellington meeting, and if he cari see out the nine furlongs he .should be hard to beat. ' . Prince of Orange ran second to Master Clarence in the High-weight at Welling*' jtony ■ and as he ran fourth to Duellona, 'Nassau Lady, and Antique in a mile and J a.:quarter event: at Eller slie, he is sure to see the journey but in tie Hauraki Hack Handicap at Takapuna. • Mashoor inay. find the class,;too;good in;the Orewa, ; High-weight at: Ta&a'puna, but Thames form points to.him running a solid race. 1 ■ ' '-** ■ "it "■"'"■ ? Sight Draft's injury to''her knee is j going to keep:;her : out of. action'for quite a spell. It was not the first occasion ;that she has' broken away when -being led on-another horse, but this time the :Paper Money filly was in a hurry- to ! reach home, and galloped from the track to the stable, where she slipped on the concrete and badly lacerated her knee. It is exceedingly bad luck for her connections, as Sight Draft is .a speedy filly, and she will be missing some money through this unfortunate accident. . Aggressive, by Kilbroney, claims an engagement in the Trial Stakes. This mare is one of Sid Hodge's charges who has been showing pace in her workouts, but would not be quite ready yet to run out seven furlongs. With,a few races the daughter of Kilbroney will be worth while keeping in mind, as she should prove quite,a useful sort. ' •

Thursday's Gallops. Envoy beat Aggressive by two lengths over, a nicely-run six furlongs, accomplished in. good time. After a furlong had been. covered, the former shied and took his companion off the course, and she naturally lost a few but hung on to it gamely. ', . , - ~ Hitting out with plenty of freedom over a task of three furlongs, Camp Princess •went, pleasingly, displaying quite a lot of speed. '■'■: ■Little Gift was half a length in front of Tops.tar at the conclusion of a fivefurlong sprint.. The latter, who was baving'his .first gallop over a journey, went fairly well ■ for a juvenile. '; White Wings, with a good weight up, was ■; responsible for a nicely-run six furlongs, accomplished in iair time. This mare is .rapidly improving. Eaglet and .Refresher were allowed to run ' along over four , furlongs ' and although not kicked out ran good time. Eaglet was in front at. the finish,' and appears to have benefited by the; light work she has been doing.sipce Ellerslie. Bold Archer and, Relation were oh terms'at-the end of a nice working gallop over five furlongs, accomplished in fair 'time. Relation has improved greatly during the past few weeks, and it would not be surprising to see him in the ■. money■ at Takapuna. :■■■;■ > r ; vk Le Choucas, going well within himself, finished "'a shade' ahead of Mithra at the .end of a "six-furlong sprint, which was reeled off in good style. With a firm 'track Le Choucas usually 'is capable of some good efforts. • i .Rose Willonyx; beat, Mashoor easily by as length at ; . the end of five furlongs. The time would have been: considerably improved had Rose Willonyx been allowed; to dp her .best. " • Vali during the past few weeks has been showing signs of soreness' when walking exercise, but after doing a nice mile and a'•half of' pace work, had thrown off Sis'soreness. This fellow is "in nice condition. ■•■• ■ ,-„-.." : v '■'•'•"•'- Imperial Prince went very well over the couple of,.', rounds of pace work allotted him, doing what;was asked of, him in a pleasing manner. ' Bells of Shandon's pace work was. undertaken! with plenty of dash,, and the Lord Quex— Peg 0' My Heart ; gelding should strip at his best on Wednesday. Mr. H; S. Rowe, "stationmaster at Ellerslie, ; who has been transferred on promotion to Ohakune, will be missed; by owners and trainers, for he was most obliging and helpful in connection with, the dispatch of racehorses to meetings.; Before leaving he and'MrsY Rbwe were entertained by their many friends, and were the recipients of several; valuable and useful presents.
