HIDDEN KNEES.
THE LONGER SKIRT.
Skirts are decreed to 'be longer. So far the hidden knee ■ha* been only a threat, but, now those arbiters of fashion, ,who glide about richly carpeted salons and wear spats and bulgy neckties, have now joined in the conspiracy. "A; woman says she dresses to please herself, but really she dresses as the conspirators please," writes a man correspondent from Paris. So the gay young thing, with nice knees, who says she will never consent to cover them, will in the end capitulate without firing a shot. No man, unless he :be & misogynist, a holy roller, or a vegetarian, dislikes knees—though some pretend to do eo, either to. placate their wives or fight temptation. The panorama of the cities will be ruined if the plot of the men with bulgy neckties succeeds. Hidden knees will bring gloom. Cotton stockings in sombre shades will follow. To-day the greyest of London'* grey days is enlivened by a stratum of gay limbs in silk stockings with knees challenging criticism. They may be knobbly kneesj they may be knotty knees or naughty knees; they may be dimpled kneee or dumb, knees without a word to say for themselves;, they may surmount shapely legs, cylindrical legs that dispense avith ankles, five o'clock legs, piano legs'or painful legs, like well-picked "drumsticks"—they all improve the view, adorn the landscape. And they are to be veiled. The Rue de la Pais has rung down the curtain* The sunlight of silk hoee is to' die out and give . way to a drab dawn. Knees are to be shrouded. Let all men go into mourning for them! ,
