J.t Carroll's • * team, -jwhoiaye. ratings at Kawakawa' to-day, will do the Waipapakauri fixture and then come on to Taka- ' puna.' !j 'j. , Prodice developed trouble in one' of her forelegs, which was the reason for her Wellington trip being- cancelled. Everything was arranged for A. Tinker to, take her South, the plans .having to be altered right at the last' moment. The Ellerslie trainer J. E. Thorpe is educating a yearling brother to Lomint and Chamour. This youngster, who is by Catmint from • Loloma, has -been well done and is well grown for one of his age. Evening Hero, winner of ,the Maiden Plate on the concluding day at Foxton, is a four-year-old gelding by Rangitero. He finished out of a place in his twopre-, vioua'i at Foxton was very weak. Joy Germ, a smart galloper over sprint distances is an acceptor in two races at the Ashhurst .meeting which takes place on January 22. He won a five furlong event at the Taumarunui meeting early in December, a,nd if taken to the southern meeting sfiould perform well. The hurdler Zircon, who 1 was taken from New Zealand and broke down when competing at Randwick, is apparently all riglit again.- He -is- Mck- from dlis -holiday and,..doipg. steady tasks at. Kensington. R. Martin has him in hand. v«" Operatic, the maiden candidate in K. Heaton's stable who contracted a cold and had to. be spelled, has commenced work .again at Ellerslie. When in work ; earlier in' the season Operatic showed fair Sprinting ability and he may turn out a useful performer later on in the season. ' _ Lady Quex, who scored an impressive win in thp .Cheltenham Handicap at. the •Takapuna } meeting? in -I November, is again entered for sprint events at the suburban meeting. The Taranaki mare is a smart sprinter, and with the going firm she can be relied on to put up a creditable showing. ( Refresher, who figures in two events on the opening day/of the Takapuna meeting, put up an attractive performance when he captured the* -Ngataringa Handicap on that course in November. He. has-failed to show to advantage since then, but if produced at his best for the North Shore meeting may show improved form. ' -•' ■ G. W. New, of Awapuni,. has had hig team increased by the addition of Merry Damon and Merry Melody, who run in the colours of ,the Gisborne sportsman, •Mr. F. Hall, and Malahat, who' is held : on lease by Mr. C. L. Ferguson, also of Gisborne. Peculiarly enough, Merry Damon and Malahat have but returned to familiar surroundings, for both have . been inmates of Awapuni stables in the past.

During the current season Prince Val has put up" several'good performances, although he failed to get on the winning list at Ellerslie. He has had a fair amount of racing and was probably a Dit off colour during the holiday meeting. However, he is engaged at Takapuna at the end of the month, and if ; he has Jfrfesheiiedvup- during the_intefval better results can be looked for at that fixture.

Since racing at Ellerslie Spring Abbey has not done any fast work, but.with the fixture and- other country meetings'• coming on--he will' soon'» be; speeded up 'in his'track efforts; :> Spring Abbey won at Takapuna in,the spring.;he finished on, well and ran .out he nine furlongs impressively. ' Althoughhe has'failed to get in':-*fhe inoney in the : interim he will probably do better when the tracks become firm again.

' Two members of-the All Red familyin< a gelding from Tit. Willow, and a halfbrother to Ngata,'the former having A. McDonald in the saddle and. the latter P. Adams, were;sent over a round' of hurdles at' Awapuni this" week. Both jumped cleanly throughout: and should prove worthy members of Mrs. McDonald's 'stable,-' says a Manawatu exchange. Although, possibly a shade small, they are both of a solid stamp.

"The success of " the progeny of the imported horse Night Raid this season has 1 no doubt influenced Mr". P. H. Osborne in his decision to send the once flying Yalicare to New Zealand in May, to be mated' with the Radium horse (says an Austra : lian writer). Valicare has a foal at foot by imported : the J to . the Don\inion.J Valicare will be quartered " at Hororstta ) until the season begins. j The Taranaki mare Monsogne has been' nominated "for several races at the coming. Takapuna meeting and will probably make the trip north. At the recent Stratford meeting Monsogne recorded a ijjvin injj' the MaJone Handicap, r.un £vgr nins ; which event she 1 defeated .besides, several other middle distance performers. If up to that form : at the North' Shore meeting she should get her share of the stake' money on offer; ~ ~ *

v.; The Te Aroha' Jockey Club invites tenders for four publicans' booths and refreshment room privileges at its forthcoming race meeting. Foreign Fancy, who is in work again at To Rapa, has plenty of. speed for; her class, but it is not- easy to get her to stand up to much galloping. The descendant of Archiestown and Lady Betty has- shown some form in the past. Prairie King, £who was in R. A. Edwards' team r'at Te Rapa,'lias been turned out, and will not be further per■sefered with this season. The King JS^assau —Arizona, Maid three-year-old wants time. ~He lias the speed. His dam has a filly foal by Musketoon at foot. The three-year-okl Gay Duke, wha was given a spell after the Av6ndale meeting, is. in work again at Te Rapa. The Lord Quex—Salvette gelding* ;will probably, make a return' to.'racing at Te Aroha early in March."' Wenday contested the Thames Plate last week, but did not race at all pi%. I'minently. The lack of form can be put down to the heavy track. P. Brady, hot 1 ' Te Rapa trainer, will take the pay; Comet mare to Takapuna for racing 'in high-weight company, when 'she may do better, .as she is in good condition. ( ; - 3 'i ' • V • v.V Parfait Amour lias been racing better this season. The Romeo —Chartreuse geld-: ing ran second at.Te Kuito and won at' the Taumarunui meeting. Parfait Amour is in nice order, and this member of A. Tinker's team at Te Rapa should reach the winning list again round the country. Paganelli continues to shape wteil. in; his track work at Te Rapa, although tlie heavy going has limited the'measure of fast work possible. The Lord Quex gelding will probably be a starter at Takapuna, after which he will be sent to New Plymouth to race in the Taranaki Stakes, which ho won-last season. Wiltshire has been taken up again' at Te Rapa, and will probably be given some racing in high-weight and hurdling events before the principal cross-country programme is tackled. P. McGuire is now in charge of the dual Grand National Steeplechase winner, and Whakama, who also races in Mr. T. Wilson's ownership. Roy Syme, who was associated with. Wiltshire as trainer-rider during that horse's successful career as a juniper, has set up as a public trainer at Te Rapa. He already has five horses in work, and should soon have a useful team to superintend. Kingfield, who has been absent from the racing scene since the Waikato meeting in mid-November, is in work again a'i i Cambridge. The King Lupin gelding sustained a stone bruise some time back, but this has now cleared away, and his best form may return with the racing of the autumn. Tho Archiestown gelding Sir Archie, who ricked himself when racing at the Takapuna meeting in November, is again in work under F. Stenning's care ,at Ellerslie. Sir Archie showed a return to form at the Whangarei spring meeting and properly placed should continue to pay his way. v Mr. E. Alison proposes to send several yearling fillies by Romeo to Sydney, where/they will be offered for sale. They are the progeny of Takaliau, Fireclay, Glenleckie, Lady Elysian. Orplieum, Florita and Thurnley. Mr. W. Taylor is also sending across a filly by Ronieo .from Lady Kerirfan. The filly from Takaliau is a half sister to Pure Blend, who had .performed well on the other side,-while the one from Fireclay is a three-quar-ter sister to Lord Romeo, who has also raced well in Australia.
