MAN TAKES HIS LIFE. OF DEPRESSION. (By l'elcgrnph.—Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, Wednesday. ' The inquest into the death of Arthur Osborne Smith, a furnisher, of, W aiiui East, who was found in the .aroom of his residence yesterday with his throat put, was held to-day." Samuel Priest said Smith as his son-in-law, and he had lived with him since the death of Smith's wife in 1925. For about two 'years he had been engaged, and was to have been married oji the morning of the fatality. On Sunday, January 5, witness was informed by Smith that the engagement was broken off. Since then Smith had been in a. very depressed state of mind. On the day of the fatality he left Smith sitting in the kitchen. Shortly after 3 p.m., when in the backyard he heard a noise, which caused him to investigate, and on going into the bathroom he found Smith with his throat cut.

Smith was a returned soldier. Of late his health, had been very indifferent, ami about two weeks ago he. had a nervous breakdown at his shop. A verdict that Smith committed suicide by cutting his throat while in a depressed state of mind was returned.
