RAILWAY "CHRISTMAS BOX."
OTAHUHTJ SHOP EMPLOYEES.
PROTEST BY LABOUR MEMBER.
Over a hundred men, employees at th«! railway workshops .it Otahuhu, received notice of dismissal to-day. The announcement camc as a very unpleasant shock to the men affected, and as a "Christmas box" it is a very unpalatable one. "The announcement ; * > caused dismay in many homes," said Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, this morning. He said that he had telegraphed to the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Pilways, pointing out the seriousness of the position in view of the large amount of unemployment in Auckland. Work had been promised by the Government to all willing and : )le men. He has also pointed out that :::any of the discharged railway men are married, and that at the moment in Auckland other employment is very scarce.
On inquiries being made, officials of the Railway Department eaid that the men concerned were casual employees, and that there was not sufficient work to keep them on.
