OFFER FOR MOUNTAIN DELL » REFUSED.
Had the owners of Mountain Dell been inclined to sell the mare, this; week" they co\ilci have received a price getting on towards four figures for. her, but -the offer was turned down. Under the new system of handicapping a promising young trotter or pacer is worth considerably more than in the, past, as the limit to which a handicapper may go in his penalties enables , a good ; horse to get a lot of money before reaching a tight mark. Mountain Dell .is now about to enter the classes where substantial stakes are on offer, and. as she appears to be quite capable of . holding her own on a reasonable handicap, it is not surprising that good money was refused for her. The Messrs. Mitchell have done rather well with a filly for which they gave only £10, but , care" and patience had a 'lot to r do; with her progress, and in this respect L. Mitchell is entitled to everypraise.-'. It, takes courage to offer 'the best'.part of..jfour figures for a horse these times, .but' it takes more courage to refuse the. offer,' and Aucklanders can only hope' Mountain Dell goes on winning and-wan-ants her owners in holding on to her. Had she been sold sjie would have gone into a stable at Christchurch. ■ '
