OPPERMAN IN NEW ZEALAND.
AUSTRALIA'S BEST CYCLIST. • Popularly known in Australia as "the wonder man of the wheel," . Hubert Opperman, whose cycling performances have placed him in the first flight of professional cyclists the world over, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Ulimaroa from Sydney, accompanied by Mrs. Opperman. The Australian crack has come to New Zealand to compete in Christchurch under contract. Photographs are sometimes deceptive, and in Opperman's case they certainly have been. He has been looked upon as something in the nature of a superman, but in reality he is of small stature; in fact, he is surprisingly small. That was the first thing that struck one when he stepped on to the wharf. Opperman and his wife said they were glad to be on land again. The trip had been uncomfortable for them, and they were not slow in' saying so. By advertisement in this issue, the Auckland Co-operative Terminating Building Society announces that the December meeting for appropriations will be held at the society's office in Wellesley Street . West, on Wednesday, 18th inst., at 7.30 p.m., when £10,400 will bo dealt with by ballot and sale, Monday, 16th Must., being the last pay day for the meeting. Attention is also drawn to an extraordinary general meeting to be hold on the same evening at 7.10 p.m.. for the amendment of certain rules of the society Buy yourself a new soft felt hat for the festive season.
