■■ > CONFERENCE AND DISPENSARY MEETINGS. LODGE INSTALLATIONS. PROGRESS OF SOCIETIES. •' A very representative body of delegates attended the quarterly meeting of the Auckland United Friendly Societies' Dispensary on November 27. The chief business of the evening was the presentation of the report of the Board of Management for the quarter ending September 30 last. The president, Bro. J. Butledge (U.A.0.D.), welcomed in suitable words the advent into the dispensary of the Auckland City Council Employees' Voluntary, Sick, and Accident Society, whoso members were ably represented by Bro. H. E. Veart. The report submitted was' entirely satisfactory, the membership showing an increase over the June quarter of 140, bringing the total membership roll to 5273. The financial stability of the dispensary has never been' better, so that from the standpoints of popularity and sound business then»'is nothing to be desired.

The new branch at 231, Dominion Road, is now in full swing, and will come as a boon and a blessing to friendly society members living in the Valley Road area.

The Gordon Tent, 1.0. R., met on Tuesday last, at Onelmnga, the C.R. Bro. Millbanks presiding. A report was presented by Bros. Campling and German of a meeting of the District Picnic Committee, showing that the picnic will again be held at.Swansbn on January 20. One member's clearance Avas granted, as ho had left the district, another member was received by clearance, and one proposed for membership. Notice of motion was given, that the meetings in future he held in alternate weeks. The Juvenile Tent members are to be invited to the next meeting on. December 17, and -will be entertained after the meeting. A good deal of routine business was transacted, and at the close the members spent a pleasant time with bowls and ping pong.. The half-yearly installation of officers of Lodge Awhina. No. 66, 1.0.0. F., Mamaku, .was held in the Assembly Hall, Mamaku, last week, the ceremony being ably conducted by Bro. A. Dibley, D.D.G.M., assisted by a strong suite of officers from sistor lodges. The following were the officers to receive installation: N.G., Bro. <W. Eyers; V.G., Bro. W. Sutherland; Rec. Sec, Bro. A. Jackson; Fin. Sec., Bro. L. King, PG; Treas., Bro. 0. Hailwood; Warden, Bro. L. King; Conductor, Bro. B. Dawson; Chaplain, Bro. H. Goodrich; R.S.N.G., Bro. P. G. Dawson; L.S.N.G., Bro. J. Henderson; R.S.S., Bro. H. Burnett; L.S.S., Bro. C. Agrew; L.S.V.G;, Bro. E. Bradshaw; R.S.V.G., Bra J. Hartneady; 1.G., Bro. J. Robinson; 0.G., Bro. R. Wenn. The elective officers were all re-elected for another term.

A meeting of the Loyal Calliope Lodge, No. 8786, was held at Court Victoria Hall, Devonport, on December 3. Installation of officers was performed, which was ably parried out by Past Grand Bro. Barber, senr., assisted by Past Grand Bro. Fletcher, Past Grands Bros. Webb and Barber, jun., acting as' conductors. Officers elected for the ensuing six months were: —Noble Grand, Bro. A. V. Styles; Vice Grand, Sister Gillespie; 1.P.N.G., Bro. Macdonald; L.M., P.G. Bro. Barber, senr.; Elec. Sec, Bro. Canty; R.S.N.G., P.G.. Bro. Fletcher; L.S.N.G., P.G. Bro. Barber, junr.; R.S.V.G., P.G., Bro. Pardington; L.S.V.G., Sister Styles; Warden, Bro. Enchmarch; Guardian. P.G., Bro. Cosgrove. A presentation of a Past Grand's collar in recognition of services rendered as treasurer to the Loyal Calliope Lodge was made to Past. Grand Bro. senr. Ordinary general business was carried out, also it was decided to hold a Christmas evening for the. juvenile members at the Court Victoria Hall on Tuesday evening, December 17, at .7.45 p.m. A subcommittee consisting of Webb, Barnhill, and Simpson, with power to add, were elected to; make arrangements for the Christmas evening.

The Light of Manukau Lodgs, U.A.0.D., had a good attendance at their meeting on Wednesday evening, when the A.D., Bro". Rico, presided.

Among the visitors present were the D.P. Bro. Smith, and representatives from Siar of Otahuhu. Ponsohby, Star of Newmarket and Te Aroha lodges. The children's Christmas tree is to be held on December 20, and a strong committee was, elected to finalise the arrangements. The sum of £2 2/ was donated towards the expenses of the Grand Lodge, delegate. The treasurer's report showed over £300 banked after last meeting. One. transfer was received, and one new member proposed. The District President presided over, the selection of representatives for the position of District President, and Friendly' Societies' conference delegates. These being district positions, the results cannot be known, until all the lodges have voted. The A.D. then resumed control and the officers of the lodge elected for the new term. These resulted as folows:—A.D., Bro. Webb; V.A., Bro. Large; J.P.A., Bro. Bice; treas., Bro. Gargin; 0.G., Bro. Stone; 1.G., Bro. Robinson; A.D.B.'s, Bros. Parfltt and Xean; V.A.B.'s, Bros. Green and Irvine; min. sec, Bro. H. Wells; librarian, Bro. Baker; organist. Bro. Stone; auditor, Bro. Thursby.> These officers were impressively, installed by Bro. Smith, D.P., assisted by P.A. Bro. Robson (Otahuhu). The retiring tf.P.A., Bro. G. Stone, was presented by the D.P., on behalf of the lodge/With his P.A.'s regalia, a framed diploma, and, an illuminated address. Bro. Stone is very popular among his fellow members, and has been tf a good .worker for the lodger A pleasant social hour was spent, together atthe conclusion of the business. ■; The Loyal Dominion Lodge, -lit/., 1.0.0.F;, held their installation of officers last Tuesday evening, when the followin<* officers were duly installed by P.G. Bro. Wilson :~N.G.; P.G. Sis, Taylor; V.G., Bro. Houghton; E.S., Bro. Owen; LP., N.G.Bro. Payne. .; ; The. following minor officers were appointed: — U.S., N.G. Sis. Jellard; L.D., N.G. Bro. Forrest; E.S., Y.G. Bro. Merrick: L.S., V.G., P.G. Bro. Ormsby; Conductor, P.G. Bro. Clews; Conductress, iSis. McJLHi; Warden, Sis. 0. Perkins; Guardian, Bro. Schofield. The F.S., in an appropriate address, reminded the elective officers that the prosperity of the lodge rested in their hands, and outlined tlie duties pertaining to each office. The honours of the Order were then extended to them. A large number of visitors were present, including the president and secretary of the U.F.S. dispensary branch at Dominion Road. These two brothers were given an opportunity of addressing the members on the advisability of linking up with the branch of the dispensary, which was to be permanently established. At the close of the proceedings dancing and games were held until,a..late hour.

The Auckland. United Friendly Socie-, ties' Conference met on Thursday even-, ing, in the Manchester Unity Hall, Hobson Street,, the chair being occupied, by the president, Bro. F. C. Pace. A number Of apologies for absence were received, and a large amount of correspondence dealt with. It was decided to write expressing the Conference's appreciation of the efforta of Bro. Shrlmpton (M.U., Wellington) in the matter of soldiers' economic pensions. The president welcomed to the meeting the delegates from the Auckland City Council Employees' Voluntary Benefit Society, the delegates briefly responding. A welcome was also extended in a most hearty maimer to Bro. T, Aitken, who returned after a serious illnessj and to Bro. J. McLeod, after his trip, abroad. Both brothers thanked the members for their ■ greetings, and Bro. McLeod gave an interesting chat on his travels. A photo was presented to the : Conference from Bro. J. Burchell, P;G.M. of the 1.0.0. F., of the first Conference inaugurated in Auckland in • 1890. This photo was accoptcd with thanks by the president, and a letter of appreciation will be sent to the donor*. It is interesting to note that many of these brethren were well known in the public life of this city, and some of them still survive. Bro. McLeod kindly gave a brief account of his recollections of each of these brethren. The Conference decided to have a photo taken of the present members, to be framed and hung side by side with the gift just received. In a short address, the president gare a brief account of the year's work, and referred to the splendid growth of the fraternal spirit between the Orders, which he partly attributed to the healthy activities of the Indoor Bawling Association, and the commingling of the Orders at the different social functions. In closing he extended the season's greetings to all Orders, personally and on behalf of the Conference. As senior brother, response was made by Bro. J. McLeod, and a very line spirited meeting came to a close.

: The fortnightly meeting of the Papa* toetoe branch, M.U., 1.0.0. F., took place on Tuesday evening last. It being quarter night more than usual interest, as taken in the proceedings. In the election of officers for.tine ensuing term Sister Leach was appointed N.G., Bro. N. McCauley V.G., Bro. M. Haddock E.S., Bro. H. Sefton, Warden. The supporting officers were Bro. W. Jones, Sis. Q. Simpson, Bro. N. Orr, Bro. A. T. Mcßeth, P.G.; Bro. F. Kemp, P.G.; Bro. F. Closey, and Bro. A. McDougall. Among the senior officers, where no ballot was necessary, Bro. E. Hadley becomes 1.P.N.G.; Bro. R. V. Closey, L.M.; Bro. Leach, F.S.; Bro. H. C. Webster, treas. The trustees, A. T. Mcßeth, P.G., F. Kemp, P.G., and Bro. Northeast. The auditors selected were Bro. R. V. Closey, P. 0., and Bro. H. Coles, P.G. The prizes donated by Bro. Webster for the indoor bowling tournament were presented to Bro. A.T. Mcßeth, P.G.', and Sister M. E. Jones. The usual meeting of the Star of Otalvtihu Lodge* U.A.0.D., was held on Tuesday night, a large attendance being presided over by the A.D., Bro. J, 0. Wells. The visitors present included Bro. Smith, D.P., P.D.Pi's Bros. McCowatt (Auckland), and Voice (Roskill), and P.A, Bro. Hunt (Roskill). The installation of the newly elected officers was carried out in a most impressive manner by the D.P., Bro. Smith, Bro. Robson, P.A., acting as presenting officer.
