CYCLING.

"BEHIND THE ROLLERS. " WESTERN" SPRINGS CARNIVAL. What should prove something in the way of a cycling treat will-be staged at the Western Springs Speedway on Monday, December 30, when the Manukau Amateur Club will hold an evening meeting. A feature of the carnival will be an attempt by Angus Mackie to lower the New Zealand five-mile motor paced record. Cycle speeding "behind the rollers" will be something new in the way of sport for Auckland enthusiasts, and the spectacle of a cyclist travelling at fifty miles an hour is one that should cause plenty of thrills. Angus Mackie, who only recently turned 17, will attempt to lower the five-mile record at present held by his brother, Will Mackie, late professional cycle champion, who was never beaten behind the rollers. Angus Mackie is the present holder of the three-mile South Island championship. There will also be a special motor-paced match between Mackie and Wade, the New Zealand half-mile champion. A "miss and out" scratch race —the last man at the end of each lap retires, until only three competitors are left in, and the remaining trio fight out the issue over the last lap —should prove very popular, while other' events that should appeal will be the £15 five-mile scratch race and a cycling match between teams representing Auckland and Wellington. No fewer than twenty events are set down for decision.
