YACHTING.

AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION

MEETS.

SANDERS CUP DATE DEFERRED

AVALON" CHOSEN" AS DEFENDER,

A meeting of delegates to the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association was held last evening in the Yacht Squadron rooms, Mr. C. H. Palmer presiding over a good attendance.

Reports from the officials on the opening day's races were received and adopted, and the officers concerned thanked for their concise report. The question of disqualifying three boats which fouled the mark at the starting line, was referred to the sailing committee.

A letter was received from the secretary of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta committee in reply to a request for a donation to the Sanders Cup funds, notifying that the committee would donate £30 and had also agreed to race the Lipton and Ross Cups on Regatta Day, both being open to visiting 14footers.

A letter was received from the Wellington Association asking that the date fixed for the first race for the Sanders Cup contest, January 25, be deferred to enable southern competitors to take part in the Wellington Anniversary Eegatta on January 22. It was decided to defer the first race until Tuesday, January 28.

The question of the indiscriminate holding of New Zealand championship events in sailing, speed boat and outboard motor boats was the subject of correspondence from southern associations. It was decided to fall in with the suggestion that such matters should be discussed at the next Dominion conference to be held in Auckland during the Sanders Cup contest.

The Takapuna Club reported that challenges for the Cornwell Cup had been received from Otago, Lyttelton, Christchurch, Wellington, Napier and Manukau. Auckland would defend the cup, the contest being allotted to Otago, commencing on February 18. These arrangements were formally approved.

The Sanders Cup finance committee reported that arrangements were in hand for the entertainment of the visitors and for raising of funds by means of a subsidy from hire launches and a picture evening. A number of owners of motor boats offered the use of their craft. Mr. Palmer expressed his pleasure at the ready response both in offers of money and in other ways of making the stay in Auckland of the visiting crews as

enjoyable as possible. The Victoria Club offered to entertain them at a smoke concert on Tuesday, January 28. The Tamaki Club will invite "them to a picnic to Motuihi on the following Sunday, if still in Auckland. Other clubs announced their intention of arranging entertainments.

The secretary reported that in response to a request to owners of boats eligible to compete in trial races, to notify him of their willingness to compete, only Avalon had responded. On Mr. Wilkinson's motion, Avalon was unanimously chosen to defend the Sanders Cup on behalf of Auckland. The matter of the crew will be considered after consultation with Avalon's skipper.
