HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S LEVY

MANUREWA'S CONTRIBUTION DOUBLED. TOWN BOARD OBJECTS. At Monday's meeting of the Manurewa Town Board, a letter was received from the Health Department stating that for some time past the amount received from the local bodies served by Senior Inspector Franklin had been totally inadequate to cover a reasonable proportion of his working expenses. Advice was given that as from April Ist of next year the cost for his services would be £48 10/ per annum. This amount was assessed on a basis of 8d per head of the most recent population figures shown in the Year Book. It was pointed out that the present contribution (about £20) was assessed when the population of the various districts served was considerably less than at present, and the work has largely increased without a commensurate return to the Department by increased «übsidies. The chairman (Mr. Geo. Gallaher) expressed surprise at the amount of the levy, and Mr. F. Whyte urged that the board should co-operate with the other local bodies concerned and act in unison in the matter. The clerk (Mr. H. Kay) pointed out that the district's population had nearly doubled since the existing levy was made. . , ■', The Chairman: I can't see the force of paying £1 per week. A suggestion was made that the services of the Manukau County Council's inspector should be secured to cover Manurewa district also. After further discussion it was decided to confer with neighbouring local bodies ** reference to the matter.
