CRICKET.

A MISSING TRIO. DISAPPOINTMENT IN AUCKLAND. SIDE OF SOLID PLAYERS. Although the Auckland representative cricket selectors have only got as far as choosing players for representative honours, the Otago selectors have made their choice tor the team which will commence a match for the Plunket Shield at Eden Park on December 24. Once more the southern selectors are faced with the disability that their leading players are unavailable, and the fact that Blunt, Dickenson and Shepherd cannot come north will greatly weaken the team. Blunt is regarded as the best all-roimd player in the Dominion, Dickenson; is certainly New Zealand's best fast bowler, while Shepherd is an all-rounder of proven skill. Some of the selected players are wellknown in Auckland. The caytain will be A. Alloo, a line all-rounder with skill as a batsman and a clever medium slow off-break bowler. Dunning was one of Auckland's best all-rounders ,'ost season, and his m.cdiuin-paced bowling should be a great aid to the south team. Another ex-Aucklander in the side is Monk, who a few seasons ago was regarded as one of the most promising right-handed medium-paced bowlers in sight, a bowler who had the rare gift of making the ball nip fast from the pitch. Since being associated with southern cricket, Monk has developed as an all-rounder. McMullan is one of the best lefthanded batsmen in the land, and will be remembered for a brilliant century in Plunket Shield cricket at Eden Park last year. He is a superlatively good fieldsman on the off, and his one-handed catch with his right hand resting on the ground at deep cover—it was off one of Bovvley's best drives—is still fresh in memory. This year Otago have also gained Jacobs, last year a promising Canterbury batsman. Elmes, Galland, Knight, Vorrath and Zimmerman have played in Auckland previously. On paper the Otago team appears to be a solid all-round side. But the fact that Otago's "big three" cannot travel north will occasion regrets both here and in Dunedin. TEAM TO PLAY AUCKLAND.
