LORRY STRIKES TRAIN.
CARRIAGE DAMAGED. DANGEROUS LEVEL CROSSING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, this day. , The urgent necessity of ' eliminating the Tawlnti level crossing at Hawera railway station> was again emphasised yesterday morning, when a motor lorry belonging to the Hawera County Council, and driven by Mr, T. H. Rose, collided with the north-bound train from Wanganui. The driver of the' lorry, which had a load of four tons of shingle, failed to hear the whistle, owing to 4 high and he was within ten yards of the crossing when he saw the oncoming train. The lorry struck a Second-class carriage, which turned the lorry parallel with the permanent way 'and draged it towards the cattle-stop. The battery box of the carriage was shattered by two towing hooks projecting from the lorry below the bottom level of the radiator. The radiator and the engine of the lorry were considerably damaged, but the driver luckily escaped injury, though glass from the left half of the windshield was scattered-in all directions.
