OBITUARY.
MRS. ANN SMITH. AGED NINETY-ONE YEARS. An early settler at Buckland, Mra. Ann Smith, died on November 8 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Hanfling, of Mount Eden. Mrs. Smith was born at Killanmare, County Cavan, Ireland, D 1 years ago, and was married to the late Mr. James Smith. They came to New Zealand in the ship Dauntless in 1865. The passage took five months, and on the voyage 97 of the passengers and crew of the Fiery Star were rescued within a few hours of the sinking of that vessel. The Fiery Star was I~ days out from Brisbane when she took" lire. Mr. and Mrs. Smith settled in the Mauku district to make a home in the bush, living in a whare until the native trouble started, when they returned to | Auckland. Afterwards, Mr. Smith farmed successfully for 25 years at Tuakau, and finally settled at Buckland, where he died 22 years ago. Mrs. Smith then went to live with her daughter, Mrs. F. McKeen, at Buckland, and was visiting her other daughter when her death took place. She is survived by five daughters, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two sons died before their mother.
