CENTRE POLE STRUCK.
■ SMASH IN WELLESLEY ST. MOTOR TRUCK DAMAGED. VISITOR'S MISFORTUNE. The centre pole in Wellesley Street , against which a few months ago a small • car was penned by a tramcar and had • to be hacked to" pieces before two 3 occupants could be extricated, was I responsible for another accident at about 1.15 o'clock this afternoon. \ A 30cwt truck, driven by Mr. R. W. i Gibson, of Te Awamutu, came out of - Kitchener Street, and. In swinging to ; the left to take the Wellesley Street incline, collided violently with the pole. • The right-hand wheel of the vehicle was ! pushed back under the drivers seat, the ■ radiator was stove in, and the chassis • was badly twisted. Mr. Gibson was ; knocked unconscious by the impact, and 1 bled profusely from a cut on the forehead. He was attended to by the St. ■ John Ambulance, and soon recovered i sufficiently to superintend the removal of the truck to a nearby garage. Mr. Gibson had come to Auckland to collect the truck, which has been stored in a garage for some months. When the accident happened he was returning to Te Awamutu, where he had prospects of disposing of the vehicle. It appears that when the trucx was turning into Wellesley Street, a hand bag which reposed on the seat began to slide from the truck. Mr. Gibson made a grab at it, and, not noticing the pole, crashed into it.
