UNEMPLOYED BILL.
Increased Payment To Wives Quashed. MISS BONDFIELD'S VIEWS. LONDON, December 4. The Minister of Labour, Miss M. Bondfield, in the House of Commons in Committee on the Unemployed Insurance Bill, said she regretted she could not accept the amendment to pay wives of unemployed men 10/ instead of 9/ a week, as it" would cost £825,000. Mr. J. Wheatley (Lab., Shettleston, Glasgow) said he believed that Miss Bondfield was personally opposed to the amendment. He regretted the day when women entered into public life. Miss Bondfield moved the closure, which was carried by 293 votes to ICB. The amendment was defeated by 229 votes to 28. Mr. Baldwin, with 50 Conservatives and 20 Liberals, did not vote. Miss Jennie Lee (Lab., Northern Lanarkshire) moved to increase the allowance for children of unemployed persons from 2/ to 5/, which would cost £4,500,000 and affect 600,000 children. This was defeated by 210 votes to 37. Many Liberals and Conservatives and dozens of the Labour members abstained from voting.
