TAX ON LADY GODIVA.
The Customs and Excise authorities have decided that funds collected at the hospital carnival and Lady Godiva procession at Coventry-will be subject to entertainment tax. The decision is stated to be based on a regulation under which the carnival committee is not recognised as a society or institution of a permanent character established solely or partly for philanthropic or charitable purposes. ■■ The committee replied to the effect that they had been operating regularly for six years, but this plea was not accepted by the commissioners. The matter was taken up without success • by Sir Archibald Boyd-Carpenter, M.P. for Coventry, in conjunction with the financial secretary, Mr. A. M. Samuel.
