MINNS CHOSEN.

RHODES SCHOLAR. RUGBY REP. FOOTBALLER. WITH DAKEST, OP OTAGO. SELECTION MADE TO-DAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Messrs. P. C. Minns (Auckland) and J. C. Dakin (Otago) were selected to-day at Rhodes Scholars for the Dominion.

A member of the teaching staff of the Mount Albert Grammar School, Mr. Minns was born at Albany, Western Australia, in 1907. He received his early education in the Wairarapa and later was at the Auckland Grammar School, to which he went with a junior national scholarship in 1921. Out of school hours Mr. Minns was a brilliant athlete and while at Grammar he won the senior athletic championship in 1924 and 1925. He held the 100 yds Waikato Challenge Shield and the Old Boys' Cup for the -quarter mile. His speed made him a valuable unit in the school senior Rugby fifteen and he was also a keen tennis player and an enthusiastic swimmer.

In winning a junior university scholarship Mr. Minns was placed seventh on the Dominion list. He entered the Auckland. University in 1926 and completed his B.A. course last year. He won a senior scholarship in French, and at the present time is reading for honours in modern languages. Since entering the University Mr. Minns has been . a member of the senior Rugby fifteen and has also played regularly with the Auckland representative side. He played for the North Island' against the South at Wellington in September last and scored the last try of the match. On his day he is a dashing player with plenty of speed and determination. He is chairman of the college athletic club and a prominent member of the Students' Association.
