SIXTH EDITION

[ AUCKLAND'S GREAT MEMORIAL I Impressive Opening Ceremony of Magnificent Museum. i f NOBLE SACRIFICES COMMEMORATED. i DEDICATION OF STATELY CENOTAPH.

T Although ten years have passed since the Great War ended, ' it seems but the other day that Auckland was cheering her I departing soldiers and mourning those that never returned. ] To-day Auckland does not mourn; rather she remembers with ] pride the noble sacrifices that her sons made on the battlehei . j Auckland can never forget. As an outward and visible sign of i her glory in the deeds of her sons, Auckland built her War t Memorial Museum on the heights overlooking the isthmus, and it lis a shrine as well as a museum. It is not Auckland City alone j that has built this splendid monument to the memory of heroes; I the whole province subscribed the unprecedented ° I £238,000, which was given willingly by the people. In front I of the magnificent white building, which stands out above the ! city, catching the earliest rays of the rising sun and the last gleams j as it sets in the west, there is a stately Cenotaph, which crystallises I the object and meaning of the museum. His Excellency, the I Governor-General opened the museum this afternoon at a s^P 1 * 5 j and dignified ceremony, and the Cenotaph was consecrated by ! the Archbishop of New Zealand.

Proceedings opened with the arrival of the vice-regal party. The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson, who were accompanied by Captain Boyle, military secretary, and Captain Orr Ewing, A.D.C., were received by members of the official party and conducted to a place on the dais.
