FRONTIER CHIEF.

Birdwood's Popularity In India. LONG TOUR OF INSPECTION. (" Times " Cables.) LONDON, November 27. The Delhi correspondent of the "Times" says the Commander-in-Chief in ''India, Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood, left Ivarapur yesterday on the last stage of a remarkable tour of inspection. This he began on the northwest frontier. , He covered central and southern India and now is going to the Andamans, thence to Calcutta and back to Delhi.

A feature of the tour to date has been Sir William's personal interviews with Indian soldiers. All ranks are grieved at the idea of losing their beloved chief.' His example and faculty for remembering the most humble of his comrades in his many campaigns have captured the imagination of the troops more than any ,leader has done since his own frontier chief, Lord Roberts.
