NATIONALISM IN CHINA.

For some time past extremely confusing reports of the state of affairs in China have reached the outside world; but it is quite clear that the Nationalist Government is now facing a dangerous foreign invasion on the one hand and civil war on the other. A rebellion led by the irrepressible Feng Yu-hsiang has gravely imperilled the authority of Chiang Kai-shek, and as a last resort he has appealed to the patriotism of his'opponents and induced them to join hands with him to repel the Russians. It is true that huge bribes appear to have played an important part in these negotiations. But the bare fact that the Kuominchun and the Kuomintang have at least momentarily sunk their differences and "sworn brothers" in the national cause certainly indicates a remarkable growth of patriotic sentiment and national spirit in China, and may be accepted as an omen of a brighter and more peaceful future.
