The Young folk's Budget of fun stories & connectitions

"GINGER MEGGS" ADVENTURE. TO-DAY'S INTERESTING COMPETITION. SPECIAL PRIZES FOR BEST TALES RECEIVED. Dear Boys and Girls,— Last week's competition was no exception to the rule that word building is the most popular competition conducted in the Budget. There was a tiuge pile of entries received, and on the whole the individual papers were well done. The lists ranged from 897 to as few as 23 words. The crocodile was very happy for a few minutes on the day when the judges gave the competition its initial sorting, for there were many children who disregarded the rules, and, of course, the crocodile ate up their papers. Roy Pearson's entry had an original list of 897 words, of which 126 were disallowed, leaving him with 771 words, a number which placed him well in the lead, for the next competitor, Edith Paris, of 23, Cromwell Road, Mount Eden, had put 639 words in her original list. In this paper there were 123 words which were struck out by the judges.

There was a drop of about 50 words to the third prize winner, but this was separated from the fourth and fifth place entries by only a very narrow margin.

Each Saturday you eagerly scan the "Star's" coloured supplement, and enjoy the antics of Ginger Meggs and his associates, Bennie and Min, and his sworn enemies, Tiger Kelly and Eddie Coogan. You are now quite familiar with Ginge and his funny little ways, and no doubt you have often thought of something that he could do; some adventure which he and the other characters of our coloured cartoon could-have. But there are

very few " Jimmy Bancks' ' l in Auckland, and I'm sure that scarcely any Budget reader could draw a similar cartoon, but every reader of this page can write a story, and so can let me know what they have made up about Ginger Meggs. The tale need not be a big one—just a couple of hundred words will do—and, of course, the plot must be original. Further particulars can be obtained ■ from Competition Corner."
