OPOITKI. The Opotiki Fire Brigade held .their annual social on Saturday night, there being a large attendance. Mr. G. g. Moody, the Mayor, presided, and Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., presented certificates to Fireman Shaw and a certificate and medpl to Fireman Webb for long service. Members of the Fire Brigade were also present. WHAKATABTE. The Whakatane School Committee on Monday decided to request the Minister of Education officially to open the new high school next February, when it is hoped the new manual training school also will be ready. Messrs. B'ullen and. Warner were fleeted to represent the committee on the deital clinic committee. It was decided to start immediately the erection of tennis and basketball courts, ajjd Messrs. Warner, Hawat and Eand weroj appointed to arrange details. TATJUANGA. The Tauranga Building Society's annual meeting was held on Thursday, Mr. B. C. Robbins (chairman) stated "that although no levy had been made for expense, the society had made a fair profit during the year. Messrs. H. P. Butts, T. H. Phillips and W. L. Foxcroft were appointed directors. Two ballots of £500 were drawn, representing the 2Stfi appropriation of a total value of £12,700. A meeting of the Tanranga Queen Carnival Committee was held on Tuesday. Mr. B. C. Bobbins presided over a full attendance. It was decided to ask the Maoris to nominate a native queen candidate,. There will now be four queens, viz., Sports Queen, Farmers' Queen, Citizens' Queen, , Maori Queen. TE AROHA. At the monthly v meeting of the Elstow Drainage Board Mr. M. H. Wynyard that although the - Awaitl' loan had only been on offer for a few days a considerable amount had already been taken up. A drainage board offering i per» cent more did not even go to a bank, but advertised,. and soon had to stop the sale of debentures, so freely were they taken up. It was highly satisfactory to. know that they were able to get money in New Zealand at -5} per cent, as against £o 14/4 for a Commonwealth loan in Australia. At a meeting of friendly society representatives on Tuesday evening Mr. W. C. Kennedy presiding, the following resolution was carried : "That in the opinion of the delegates present the time has arrived when a public hospital should* be-erected' in Te Aroha;"
