RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MANUKAU ROVERS CLUB. ANNUAL PRIZE NIGHT. The annual prize giving night of the Mamikau Hovers Football Club was held in the Orpheum Hall, Onehiinga, on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, including many ladies, and dancing was indulged in until midnight. The Auckland Rugby Union was represented by Messrs. 11. Frost,-A. Tilly and T. W. Mabin. In presenting Hie tropliits won last season, the president of the club, Mr. ,T. E. Green, J.P., remarked that the standard of play had shown a marked improvement on that of past years, and that the club had been fairly prominent in all the grade competitions. The sixth grade had recorded a meritorious win by playing 14 matches without a loss, for *vlik']i the good coaching of Mr. R. Pepper was partly responsible. Mr. Green thanked ' the Onehunga Borough Council for the interest it. had shown in outdoor sports and games in putting their recreation reserve in good order. 'Some £2000 had been spent in levelling this area of 30 acres, which was now well grassed, and afforded ample room for ten or twelve football and hockey matc'lies. This would greatly relieve the demand for playing areas in the metropolitan area, and the council deserved the thanks of all sports bodies and the public generally. During the past season six of the club's players had attained representative honours, namely: A. Falwasser, C. Satherley, L. McGuire, M. Kaliu, J. Brimble and A. Bryers.

Mr. 11. Frost congratulated the club on its continued prosperity. The effect of good coaching, he said, was making itself felt, and he hoped before long to see the club at the top of the tree. On behalf of the Rugby Union he thanked the Onehunga Borough Council for its practical help in relieving the pressure for more playing outlets, and he thought that the president of the club, Mr. J. E. Green, was also entitled to a share of the credit for the improvemeuts made in the recreation reserve. Mr. F. McLaren, captain of the sixth grade team, was presented with the championship cup ami the Dodd Cup. The Jordan Cup for the best team in the Manukau electorate went to the Senior A grade, captained by Albert'Falwasser. Caps were also presented to members of the sixth grade team, and representative caps to C. Satherley and L. McGuire. The captain of the fourth grade team, J. Collins, took the S.vers Shield, while the secretary of the club, C. J. Williams was made the recipient of a handsome tea set of English china in appreciation of his services.
